Getting Started in Office

Congratulations on your election or appointment as fire commissioner! As a member of the WFCA, you have access to our training and resources to help you excel in your role as a fire commissioner. Here are a few tasks to get you started!

1

Join our Community

To access member resources and our Fire Service Community, you must create an account and get added to our directory. The main WFCA contact for your district can send you an invite to join Washington's Fire Service Community and give you full access to our resources and community. If haven't received your welcome email, contact us or your district secretary.

Read the Commissioner Handbook

Whether you are a commissioner of a fire protection district or a member of the governing board of an RFA, whether you have just begun to serve in this role or whether you have years of experience this handbook is designed to provide you with a basic guide to understanding the various roles, duties and responsibilities that you will have as a member of a governing body.

Take the Mandatory Training

Although there are a few different places to take the government mandated training, the WFCA partners with Fire District Attorney Brian Snure to offer training for this exact purpose. Our seminar for new commissioners, chiefs, and administrators provides the knowledge and background needed to understand and address the challenges involved in governing, leading and operating fire districts and regional fire authorities. In even numbered years we offer new commissioner training in the spring, so check out our event calendar. In odd numbered years you can watch a recording of the previous year's class.
