Ensure your firefighters are trained to recognize confined spaces and to make a safe entry.
Ensure air monitoring equipment is properly tested/calibrated before firefighters enter a potential IDLH environment. Without these tests, the presence of a safe atmosphere or actual exposures will be unknown.
Develop an Accident Prevention Plan for your department.
Appoint a respirator program administrator to oversee all aspects of the respiratory protection program.
When moving apparatus, ensure the spotters are fully visible at all times. If they cannot be seen or heard, the apparatus must be stopped. Ensure your department’s Apparatus Movement Policy is up to date and is followed.
For live fire training, ensure all aspects of the burn building are functioning properly including access doors, automatic ventilators, thermal sensors and emergency shutdown equipment and are checked for proper operation prior to any live fire training
evolutions. Provide adequate instructor oversight of the training evolution.
We approached L & I about the practice of not including fire commissioners at the in-brief and out-brief of L & I inspections. L & I is now directing that at least one fire commissioner be present at these briefings.
